The Guest Chair

I designed the cover art for this fictional long-form podcast where exclusive guests share insights into their most scandalous moments in pop culture. Inspired by the New York Times' podcast aesthetic, I analyzed existing designs, such as The Daily and Serial, to create a clean and sophisticated visual identity that aligns with a journalistic tone. The cropped chair on the cover symbolizes both elegance and intimacy, inviting listeners into the revealing and personal nature of the interviews. The restrained color palette and thoughtful typography echo the professionalism of a trusted media outlet, making the design both compelling and approachable.

The Process

Not a lot of sketches for this one, beyond a knowing I wanted to utilize a single chair. I was more interested to see how the type of chair influenced the overall feeling. The first version of this cover art utilized a very linear folding chair, as opposed to the more organic chair used in the final project.

Color Exploration

I tested a lot of different colors to make sure I found the right one. Ultimately I decided to use the orange chair with the purple glow in the background. These almost complementary colors highlighted the push-and-pull between the guests' lived experience and what the media said about them.
