Title Sequence

Storyboarding

This project explores a reimagined animated title sequence for Wild at Heart, drawing from David Lynch’s symbolic storytelling and distinctive cinematic techniques. Through close analysis of the film, I identified recurring motifs and visual cues, with particular attention to its overt references to The Wizard of Oz and Lynch’s signature matchstick transitions.

The storyboard and final sequence open in black and white, echoing classic Hollywood and The Wizard of Oz, before igniting into vivid color through a matchstick transition inspired by Lynch’s films. The flame reveals the Emerald City, merging Oz iconography with the film’s surreal tone. A snaking yellow brick road carries the sequence forward, referencing Oz's yellow brick road and Sailor’s snakeskin jacket - a symbol of individuality and freedom - depicting the film’s cross-country journey. Bold reds and greens reflect Lynch’s cinematography, while refined textures and simplified forms keep the focus on movement, symbolism, and narrative flow. The result is a title sequence that translates Lynch’s visual language into a cohesive, contemporary interpretation of Wild at Heart.
